Sony announces Infamous, new sandbox PS3 game from Sly Cooper devs

With GTA IV going to Xbox 360 as well, Sony's itching for some exclusive sandbox action for their Playstation 3. Enter Infamous, a new open-ended action/exploration game from Suckerpunch, the developers of the Sly Cooper games.
Phil Harrison, COO of Sony Computer Entertainment, introduced the game at Sony's E3 2007 keynote, showing what appeared to be in-game footage of a main character using numerous superpowers. An odd blur of City of Heroes and Crackdown, players will determine whether they want their characters to become heroes or villains in the course of gameplay, with supposedly different powers and missions as a result. Very little is known about Infamous at the moment, and with no rough release date mentioned, the game is presumed to be in the early development stages.

An original superhero game? Could be bad but it sounds good. Suddenly the PS3 is looking attractive (but still too expensive.)

This looks a little generic to me, which is sad considering that Sly Cooper had more personality than fifty other games combined. Still, it's Sucker Punch, and I'll give them more than the benefit of the doubt.

As I said in the main blog when this was first announced, this is the 3rd developer under Sony publishing to delay a beloved family-friendly series to work on a game with more hardcore-gamer appeal. The first was Insomniac, and the second was NaughtyDog. It seems like Sony focusing all their efforts on realistic looking games in order to appeal to the 360's hardcore-gamer fanbase, but at the same time handing over the casual and family markets that made the PS2 big to Nintendo!
I love the Sly series. Give me a Sly game, and a Jak game that returns to its roots instead of this "I'm X-treme" crap, and I'll seriously consider buying a PS3. (Give me a Klonoa or Tail Concerto sequel, and I'm there!) Everyone isn't into FPS games. I'm certainly not. The PS2 sold as well as it did because it had variety, every genre was represented. But not so on the PS3.
