Virtually there: Sony's Killzone event

Sony took over Sushi Roku to show off an exclusive preview of Killzone 2 to the press. While our readers continue to argue over whether or not our impressions were negative, or positive, we wanted to show you how Sony threw a party. The sushi and drinks were never-ending, and the Japanese sushi chefs were constantly jovial and friendly. The menu was simple, consisting of tuna sashimi, California rolls, shrimp tempura, and other standard sushi fare.

Amongst a crowd of international journalists and tons of unfamiliar faces, we saw Sony executives mingle and chat freely about the state of PlayStation. Somehow, the giant Phil Harrison snuck behind us as we grabbed a drink. Afar, we could hear Kaz Hirai talking about PS3 sales figures. As we headed to the behind-closed-doors screening, a life sized Helghast greeted us, with ominous eyes. We were hoping it would animate at some point, because we'd certainly be scared out of pants. The event was a rousing success, showcasing Sony's ability to mix style with gaming. Check out our gallery of the event below:

Watch out for the kool-aid!

Killzone 2 might be the best shooter ever on a console if it really sticks to doing the best of each of the best console FPS's out right now. In the earlier trailer we saw fire-fights like in Resistance and Call of Duty. We saw a boss-type battle with a hulking mass like in Halo. We saw duck and cover combat like in Gears of War. Taking from all these games could make or break this game as the best shooter on any console or as a copycat of every other good shooter.

You mean, considering none of that other stuff is *actually* sushi?

(ok ok, call me a nitpicker. Maybe I'll grant you California rolls, even though they're not Japanese.)

Did everyone seem to forget that the first Killzone game was just a mediocre Halo clone?

Not those with Fanboy-Goggles on apparently.

1. Killzone and Halo are actually quite different, so it's incorrect to call-it a Halo clone.

2. The first Killzone wasn't outstanding, but it wasn't bad. The game got a lot of flack for not living-up to the media persona given to-it as a "Halo killer", so when it didn't live-up to the hype it got bashed and underrated. Besides, there are times when a video game series can redeem itself. Remember Devil May Cry 2? Everyone thought that game was crap, but it came back on-top with DMC3. Killzone Liberation was a really good game, and from what I can see in the Killzone 2 trailer it definitely has potential. All we can do is wait and see.

Did you seem to forget Killzone 1 was nothing like Halo?

But some of us can take off our fanboy-goggles and see that just because the first was mediocre doesn't mean they didn't solve the problems with it and make a great game.
We'll have to wait for it to actually release to know for sure, but right now it looks pretty damn good, and I'm willing to give it a chance rather than write it off because of the first title.

Yeah, I wasnt saying that as a fanboy, I was saying it as a person who likes games that have more than just some fancy graphics. Killzone was undeniably mediocre, all the reviews were lukewarm. I think it is you all with the fanboy goggles who only see the pretty, and forget that it was a bitch to you a few years ago.

you do know there is a difference between "sushi" and just "japanese food"?

Sushi sure beats a decapitated goat. At least Sony is getting better at catering.

Killzone 2 will obviously be a good game; I mean, Killzone was one of the best FPS's I've ever played and really revolutionized the genre.... Oh wait, no it didn't.

Just because the first game didn't live-up to the hype doesn't mean the second one wont.

I really don't see what's so great about this game apart from the visuals. Yay, yet another run n' gun FPS clone. There's really not much that seperates this game from anything else in the FPS genre.

Oh i can see how many 360 haters come to bach Sony, i think they are afraid and jealous of a gaming revolution soo afraid....

Who's here to bash Sony? People are simply pointing out that there is a lot of hype for a sequel to a game that was merely average.

Afraid of what? You haven't given any reasons as to why Killzone 2 will be worth anyones time. All you've done is claim that everyone that's not a Sony fanboy is "afraid" of the "sucess" of Killzone 2.

Considering how average the original Killzone was I can't really see how ANYONE would be touting Killzone 2 as the PS3's next killer app, but I would love to be proven wrong.
